How Do I Reduce Output Resolution

    Hi Doug,

The EPS files are as close to resolution free as it can get, but there is an attribute that is attached with the file to tell a RIP how to break apart the paths. It's similar to a Photoshop EPS with a silhouette, as you mentioned. You can select the flatness for the path, where a higher number means it will lessen the quality of the path.

In Illustrator, the used to allow, oddly, the setting of the resolution of EACH path (not a great idea), and later they blended it in to one overall document value.

If a client is outputing their files to their laser printer, they might need to lessen the quality of the output, so they could set the document resolution to a lower value, like 300DPI. That same DPI would look terrible when RIPped as all curved paths become a series of straight lines.

We are using a Creo/Scitex RIP which in fact reads and applies this output resolution to the vector based art. Some other RIPs might ignore the value all together. I just needed to be sure the file would RIP at high quality.

    Thanks Allen,

Actually, I have the solution. Open the file in CS and resave the EPS. That is it.

The EPS saved from CS is what appears to be resolution free (yay!). I did a simple test, made a donut in AI10, used 100DPI for output resolution, open and saved out of AICS, RIPped both, printed out. The results were clear, the AI10 had the flatness applied to the curves, the AICS didn't.

Lydia mentioned it above, but again, I was concerned about an EPS saved out of AI, not printing from AI. I needed to be clear on this.
