Default HOW do they do that?

Anybody knows how do they create this type of effect?

We've had this picture since 2001, so I suspect it was shot with film.

Looks like tricky lighting.

You may be able to emulate this sort of thing with a Gradient Map, blending mode set to color....or something like that.

It's an old lighting trick that used to be popular. Several lights surrounding the subject fitted with different colored gels cause shadows to be different colors than mid-tones and highlights. I guess it's perfectly do-able in Photoshop but this is one of those things where it's simply easier to do in-camera. (If you know what you're doing.)

Thanks PShock, now I understand how they did that.

But I have a "stupid" question: When Photographers refer to "gels", like you did here, do they mean these pieces of colored plastic they put in front of spotlights?

Yes - that's what a gel is.

Hi,

In the Macromedia example, Brocade Inc
(http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flex/example_apps.html#), the user can click
on the QuickView/MeasureView buttons to change the panels that are visible.
I've tried doing this by hiding the visibility of my panels but it doesn't
work. Anyone know the trick they're using here?

Thanks,

This is probably a ViewStack. That is certainly the simplest way to acheive this functionality.
