Start at Ian Lyons' most excellent site <http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ps7-colour/ps7_1.htm> on color management (which begins with monitor calibration). It's a pretty easy read and makes a great deal of sense - you should be on your way in no time.

Also, see Adobe's page on Using Adobe Gamma <http://www.adobe.com/support/techguides/photoshop/cms2/gamma.html>.

    Uncle Tom,
Note that your Samsung 172T is an LCD display . The Adobe Gamma utility is not designed for LCD displays, so not all the Adobe Gamma settings make sense on an LCD. You may be able to improve your color balance, though, using the sliders, and you will certainly create a profile ( just not a real accurate one ! ) .

    Tony,
Tom has a few other threads going on generally the same subject, from different angles. Mostly on the Elements forum, I think.

If you are using a good printer with expensive ink and desire an output that at least comes close to matching what you see on your monitor, buy a Spyder (or some other decent hardware profiler).

You'll save paper, ink, and hair--and enough money in the long run to pay for whatever tool you buy.
