    Actually, Seamus, it's an abbreviation of "kuckoo", which has, er,
    negative connotations across the water.

    Sadly, apart from being the herald of summer, the cuckoo has a rather
    nasty reputation. Specifically for dumping its eggs in other birds'
    nests rather than building its own. When the young cuckoos hatch
    they often tip the host eggs/hatchlings out of the nest. I'm sure
    there's an ethnic ogy I could make.
