The product explanation and tutorial was incomplete.

Does the developer and the client both need to purchase the contribute
software?
What alternative ways are there to have client's update their own sites that I
as the web designer initially creates?

Yes. Each of you would need a copy. You can use yours for administering an
unlimited number of sites. They can use theirs on a single workstation.

How long do you have to read? The list is long. But none of the
alternatives are as nicely packaged (in terms of features and flexibility)
as Contribute.
