How long to wait for HP 5550c support

Greetings,

Just installed ubuntu yesterday (have not used linux since RedHat 5).
I did search and see that my HP ScanJet 5550c is not a supported
scanner or use with xsane. Am I out of luck or do scanners eventually get
supported? Thanks in advance.

From what I can see here

work in the future.
