How to access first element of string? - PHP Development

Hello, I have written such a code: $String="12345"; $String[0]='?' It makes $String an array, but I just want to set the first char of it (1) into ?. I also tried $String[0]=chr(ord('?')); but it also doesn't work. I looked at the manul, but I can't find how to do it. Regrds, Talthen...

    $String{0} = '?' should work.

    Well... it doesn't ;/
    Also ${String[0]}='?' does not work.

    It worked for me. Here is the exact code I ran to test it:

    $s = "12345";
    $s{0} = '?';
    echo $s;

    "ZeldorBlat" <com>

    Indeed. It works. I had just the following problem: my string was empty and
    then I tried to change its first element to ?.
    After this it was still = "Array". But when I checked isset and empty I got
    that this string is not empty nor unset. Heh :)

    Now, it's working, thanks.

    Talthen
