Assuming there's no text in it, right click the box, choose content, and
    then unassigned.

You don't even have to click unassigned. All ID boxes have no value. You can use any tool you want to make a box. You can import anything into a box: txt, jpg, pdf, eps, ai, etc. You don't even have to make a box. Command-D to place, navigate to your file, select, then paste. So even if you use the text tool to draw a box you can place an image into the box.

I find it useful to have no content boxes as just that; it's less cluttering on the screen, particularly the huge 'x' through empty graphics frames and I can be sure there's no font lurking in an empty text frame.

I have the shortcut command-u to turn an empty graphics or text frame into a none frame.

Jack, unfortunately, if the text frame has actual content in it, you must first delete the text content before you use the object settings to change it to another type. In addition, you cannot change the content if the text cursor is active in the frame.

    • On the downside, this is not as convenient as Quark's implementation.

    • On the upside, you cannot accidently loose test by converting the text frame to an object or graphic frame. You have to deliberately delete the text.

If the text frame is empty, then:
Select the empty text frame with the selection tool (black arrow)

Go to the menu: Object > Content > and select the content style preferred.
