how to connect a windows xp PC to solaris 9 machine by telnet (Connection to host lost) ? thanks ! - Sun Solaris

I have a windows XP machine and a solaris 9 machine, they can ping each other. but when i telnet to the solaris from xp , it give me the following message, what should i do ? thanks for your help ! ------------------------------------------------------- SunOS 5.9 login: root Password: Not on system console Connection to host lost.     I have a windows XP machine and a solaris 9 machine, they can ping each

    but when i telnet to the solaris from xp , it give me the following message,

    yes, it worked !

    but why not root ? the other user can not shut down the solaris by init 5 ..

    i want to be able to remotely shut down the solaris by telnet user...

    If you are asking "why not root" maybe you should just stick with XP.

    When you telnet to a box as root, the password is sent across the network
    in clear text. (not encrypted) Anyone with packet sniffing programs (such
    as tcpdump or ethereal) can now compromise your machine.

    Go to /etc/default/login and put a # in front of CONSOLE=/dev/console.
