How to create a diver flag? - Macromedia Freehand

Hello community, I would like to create an US style dive flag but I am quite new to FreeHand. I tried it already but the result is not so nice as it should be. An original flag is shown here, http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/, in the upper left corner. Every help and hint is appreciated. Cheers, H....

    Hello community,

I would like to create an US style dive flag but I am quite new to FreeHand. I
tried it already but the result is not so nice as it should be. An original
flag is shown here, http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/, in the upper left
    corner.

Every help and hint is appreciated.

    Cheers,

    H.

There are many ways to do this but here's one way:

    1. Import the GIF or JPEG reference image. Open layer panel. Put image on
the Background layer, and lock layer.

    2. On Foreground layer. Draw rectangle of outline of flag. In Object
Inspector, fill with red, no stroke.

    3. Turn on snap-to-points. With line tool, draw a line diagonally from
corner to corner. Give it a wide white stroke.

    4. With white stroke selected, Edit > Cut.

    5. Select red rectangle and Edit > Paste Inside.

    6. To draw the cross, Line tool, Shift-drag from top to bottom to create
vertical line. In Object Inspector, give the line a white stroke, width of
    cross upright. Leave selected.

    7. With upright still selected, Edit > Clone. Open Transform/Rotate panel.
    Enter 90 degrees. Click 'Rotate'.

    8. Select All. Group.

If you need outlines of the white strokes, use
Xtras > Path Operations > Expand Stroke, and then
    Modify > Combine > Union.

As you get familiar with FH, using keyboard shortcuts or toolbar icons for
the commands will eliminate all those trips through the menus.

Correction: If you use a reference image on the Background layer, leave the
red fill to the last step so you can see the image in Preview mode.
