Ann is correct. The use of Spot Color Channels offeres the ability to retain spot colors in Photoshop. It's not a "simple" explanation without knowing how much knowledge someone has of Photoshop. If you are unfamiliar with channels I'd suggest checking the help files or the Manual for your current version (if any) of Photoshop. Spot Color Channels have been available for several versions and pretty much opperate the same way they always have with Photoshop CS.
