How to edit PHP?

Hi There,

I got this website thats was build for me and I will like to make some modfications to it. Like for example change the colors of the index.php page, maybe add a table, change some other things.

The thing is like HTML, where you can look at the changes you make while you using an editor (FP, DW) and load the changes using a FTP client, I'm not that familiar with PHP and I haven't found any applications that will work similar to HTML.

If there's anyone that can tell me how or point me in the right direction on how I can edit a PHP page or template? is there anyway I can see the changes while I'm doing them before I upload them?
