HOW TO FIND RESOLUTION OF EMBEDDED IMAGES???

This will tell you what the resolution of the embedded image is in Illustrator, not the resolution of the Photoshop file that was imported was/is.

So if you place a 300ppi file unlinked and then tranform it to 50% of the size that it came in as, document info> embedded images will indicate 600ppi.

So, what does this mean? Is it like Photoshop, when people take a crappy 72dpi web graphic and just make it 300dpi to suit our spec's? Does it make any difference in quality?

No, it means that size transformations in Illy are the same as resizing WITHOUT resampling in Photoshop, so you can bring in a 72ppi file and transform it to 25%, and have a hirez image, or if you enlarge a pic too much you can have low rez.

There IS the rasterize command which will resample your embedded bitmap (a good thing for files that contain overkill images at 1000ppi). I can't see somebody using rasterize in Illy to increase 72 to 300, mainly because the type of user that would be putting 72ppi scans in, probably wouldn't even know how to find resolution in document info, or about the rasterize command.

He did not ask is there anyway to find the resolution or image size of the original image file.

Again the answer is yes. Document Info Palette.

Photos have a fixed number of pixels across and down. Specifying a PPI value in PS will calculate a dimensional width and height. Changing Width/Height willcange the ppi value but not alter the image.

Changing the dimensions and keeping a certain ppi will res up or res down the actual bitmapp.

Reducing the magnification in Illy/QX/ID will change the effective resolution of the placed/linked/embedded image but the original is unchanged

The Answer to the posters question was a simple yes the document palette.

Daniel wanted a simple answer. But he did not sound like he was unfamiliar with
the concepts of image resolution. It is a common oversight not to know about the Document Info Palette.

Perhaps John could have waited for Daniel to response and ask for more info.
