How to make temp file? - Windows XP/2000/ME

I am brand new at XP and need to know how to make a temp file to copy my software program to from my HP printer\scanner\copier 380. I had to use another driver and put it as 550c HP printer becaue HP does not upgrade my p\s\c. The problem I have is that when I try to install the software it keeps giving me the following message: "16 bit Windows Subsystem C:\DOE~1\Loti\LOCALS~1\Temp\ A temporary file needed for intialization could not be created or could not be written to. Default How to make temp file?

I am brand new at XP and need to know how to make a temp
file to copy my software program to from my HP
printer\scanner\copier 380. I had to use another driver
and put it as 550c HP printer becaue HP does not upgrade
my p\s\c. The problem I have is that when I try to install
the software it keeps giving me the following message:

    "16 bit Windows Subsystem
    C:\DOE~1\Loti\LOCALS~1\Temp\
A temporary file needed for intialization could not be
created or could not be written to. Make sure that the
directiory path exists, and disk space is available.
Coose 'Close' to terminate the application."

Would one of you please tell me how to type this file and
where to put it in my computer so I can use the software?
I do know how to do this in Windows 95 and 98, but I can't
    figure it out in XP.

Thank you so much for your patience and assistance.

I would make sure that the folder TEMP exists at the given location.
Maybe the software has a problem with the long path name. You could
create a folder TEMP under C:\
Then go to the Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment
Variables and change the settings for TEMP and TMP so that these
variables point to the new C:\TEMP folder. Restart Windows to activate
    the setting.
