How to print multipage .PDF files from Illustrator 10?
Can anyone tell me if you can print multi-page .PDF files out of Illustrator 10?
I can set up my page tiling just fine and print multi page files to any of my laser printers without problems. However when I go to print a multi page .PDF or .PS file all I get is the last page of my file. It seems that the files just overwrite one another printing a page at a time (i.e. page 1 over and over again even though it is different pages). In 9 I could print multi page .PDFs no problem or multi page .PS files without a problem.
Saving the entire document as a .PDF doesn't help me as many of my clients want to see 8.5x11 layouts and send them to their own printers.
I have Ill 10.0.3 on a G5 OS 10.2.8, 1.8 GHz, 1 MB RAM.

Argg, I have the same question. Freehand does this nicely, and its one snag in our converting over to Illustrator from Freehand to ease the workflow between illustration program and Photoshop. Copying and pasting from Freehand MX to PSD CS crashes Photoshop.

Re: How to print multipage .PDF files from Illustrator 10?
You can't. You will have to print them from Acrobat or Reader. You cannot make a multipage .PS file from AI10 either.

And this is what illustration programs from Adobe should do and should have done for years.

Re: How to print multipage .PDF files from Illustrator 10?
"this is what page layout applications are for. Like ID"
That is a crock. If that is true, why does Illustrator support multiple page tiling?
Fact is we have been able to create multi page .PS files from Illustrator for years and then run them through Distiller very easily for .PDFs.
In the past if I was designing some logos I could easily set multiple page tiling distribute a logo into each one, print a .PS, distill it and send it to my client in a efficient package where they could easily print out the designs if they wanted.
Now my choice is to print individual .PS or .PDF pages then merge them manually in Acrobat which takes forever or send one big .PDF of the layout but is unprintable for my client.
It is a step backward and instead of arguing the merits of when to choose which kind of program I'm looking for answers on how to fix it. Illustrator did it for years and now it doesn't.

will this argument ever end?
now if I can only figure out the best way to typeset my novel in Illustrator, or better yet Photoshop...
I should be able to, after all, both applications support text.
PS: I forget, does the hotdoor plugin help for making multipage PDFs from Illy10 tiled docs?

Re: How to print multipage .PDF files from Illustrator 10?
The problem is with the mixed environment that AI10 works in, both OS9 and OSX. In order to print in OSX, the multipage option got messed up. If you truly need it, the the easiest way is to upgrade to AICS which supports multipage PDF files.

Larry,
I've been posting this question everywhere. I think you've answered it. Please verify: If I have a two page document in Illustrator CS, can I pdf to two pages just using the print dialog box? Just like it behaved in Illustrator 8.0?

Re: How to print multipage .PDF files from Illustrator 10?
Yes, print to a PS file and distill, or print directly to PDF using the Adobe PDF driver. In other words, you need Acrobat.

I've tried this. Not working. Could you explain a little more detail. Currently I have tiled page 11X17 in 4 pages with image in each using page tiling.
How do you get pdf to make pdf document so that its 4 pages instead of one big 11X17 page?
Thanks!

Re: How to print multipage .PDF files from Illustrator 10?
In Illustrator CS, go to Document Setup and set the artboard dimensions to 17 by 22. You'll get one big document. Imediately go to Print, and choose Adobe PDF as your printer. Click the Setup tab and in the Options panel, switch from Single Full Page to Tile Full Pages, and click Done. Back in your document, it's still onoe big box. Go to the View mwnu and turn on View Page Tiling. Your document now has four pages, and you can lay it out with artwork as yo wish. When you're ready, go to Print, and print to the Adobe PDF printer. You should get a PDF file with four pages. (It might take a few seconds for the file to appear on your desktop, and you should probably save the file as an .ai file first, because the PDF printer doesn't give you a chance to name it, and it will be Untitled-1.pdf by default.)

Re: How to print multipage .PDF files from Illustrator 10?
To add to Gary's instructions (which will work perfectly if you follow them):
You actually CAN name the resulting multi-page PDF before "printing" it if you care to.
1. After preparing your artwork, and going to Print, you'll be in the AICS Print dialog.
2. Click Printer... (at the lower left of the AICS Print dialog).
3. IGNORE any warnings you get; in other words, click CONTINUE.
4. You're now in the OS Print dialog. Click Print.
5. This will bring up a Save to File dialog where you can name the PDF and specify its location. Click Save. This returns you to the AICS Print dialog. Click Print, and your PDF will be saved to the location you specified.
Another advantage of these extra steps is that, once in the OS Print dialog, you can set the Job options (e.g., Standard, Press, PDFX) for the PDF you're about to make.

Re: How to print multipage .PDF files from Illustrator 10?
Good one Doug.
I was going to add that you should check what Distiller 6's set to first because that's what the Adobe PDF printer will use. Didn't realize that part about taking a side trip to OS X Print dialog.
Also... we created a printer preset for "multipage pdfs" and 'multipage ps files" (using PostScript File/Distiller as destination/ppd) which saves a lot of time. You can still change doc dimensions ("number of pages') as necessary, the same preset will do the job regardless.

Re: How to print multipage .PDF files from Illustrator 10?
And another thing it would be nice to have multiple page capabilities in AI CS.
Just like FreeHand, well maybe better than Freehand but we don't need it to be ID either.
