Default how to see hard drive usage?

    Hi all

I have a debian server thats been running for a very very long time now. I
recently looked and its 2 gig drive is half full. There is no logon users,
just the server/firewall software. There is no pictures and i read/purge the
log files regulary. How can i find where the storage is gone to (ie
packages, files etc)? And then see what is relevent? The install was
origionaly about 500-600 megs, and 400-500 i cant acount for and its like
25% of the servers drive. I would love to learn more on how to see where its
all going. BTW could it be some hacker useing it? I doupt it (but see the
inet useage light flashen a lot), i secured it pretty tight as per the
secure how-to, with only ssh, http, and a webcam port open, and the rest
closed maybe any ideas on howto scan for this would be great to, since it
has been online for a couple years now.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Arron

You could use the find command to look by creation or modification

You could check for rootkit install

When I was one of the sysadmins of a bunch of UNIX machines that had
small (by today's standards: $40K for 40 Megabytes 2500rpm), and had
about 32 active users per machine, we were always running out of disk

    du /home | sort -nr | head 50

This gives a report that looks like this:

(Obviously as this systems main user, I am the disk hog on it.)
You could do something like that on your machine, piping it through less
instead of head, to see all the file useage. You probably do want to
sort numerically to see the biggest hogs first.
