My news server and mail (smtp) servers are on the same domain so I don't
know if this may be an issue for Mozilla or not. When I select the
"reply" button from the tool bar I get a small window open that says
"Compose: Re: (title of selected article)" and then below this a few
tool buttons, "send", "address", etc. Then the "From:" line followed by
the "To" address drop down which defaults to newsgroup with this groups
name in it. I type in my reply and then hit the "send" button mentioned
    above.

Default how to setup mozilla to post articles

How does one set up mozilla to post articles? I've specified the server
and am able to download newsgroups' messages. Unfortunately, selecting
an article and then selecting reply brings up the composer (I'd prefer
using vim, but that's a different question): clicking on the [Send]
button or selecting "Reply to newsgroup" both yield

"Sending of message failed, Please verify that your Mail and
Newsgroup settings are correct and try again".

The help seems dedicated to helping with email more than with
newsgroups (which, by the way, I do have working with both
    send and receive).

BTW this article was posted with trn on an old SGI/Irix box using
the same news server that I'm successfully using with mozilla to
    download but not currently post.

    Thank you,
    Chip Campbell

This is a known bug in versions of Mozilla prior to 1.4.

The bug only shows up if you have the original message to which you are
replying still open as well as the reply.

The workaround is to close the original message before sending the
reply. That is, read message, hit reply button, compose reply, close
    original message, send reply.

Or you could upgrade to 1.4 or the 1.5 beta.
