Huh? Works on p. 48, not on p. 56 . . . ?!?

    Default Huh? Works on p. 48, not on p. 56 . . . ?!?

    Hiya Friends. Daily InDesign mystery:

I'm wishing to create some white text on a grey background. I've got a character format defining the tagged text as white. I've got a small graphics frame to serve as the background; it consists of a 50% screen. I position the frame over the text, arrange the elements so the white text shows through the grey frame, Bob's your uncle. Works fine, on pages 39, 43, 46, and 48 anyway. It doesn't work at all the next time I try it, on p. 56 of my document. I can't figure out what I'm doing differently/wrong. I take the text and frame from p. 39, 43, 46, and 48, and copy them both to p. 56. Nothing works: the arrangement that works fine on the earlier pages cannot be brought to work for love or money on p. 56 (or some, but by no means all, subsequent pages). The frame/text that doesn't work on p. 56, works fine on the earlier pages. The same master page is applied to all pages.

What am I looking at here --- anybody have any ideas? A workaround? No doubt I'm missing something obvious . . . but what is that thing?

text shows through the grey frame

Text should always be on top.

    Always!

Buko, text on top is a good rule and I use it by default.

I'm sure you'll agree, there are times when the design calls for text underneath transparency, shadows etc. Then you could well be in trouble.

However, that's not the issue here as the layout works on all but one page. There's a known issue discussed in another thread about larger documents causing trouble. Is this related?

If you place text under transparency the text will raster.

if this is the effect you want fine I would never do it.

If you place text under transparency the text will raster

    This is NOT correct.

If you place text under vector transparency the text will stay text. Parts of the text may be converted to paths.

If you place text under pixel transparency (i.e. feather, drop shadow, PSD), the FILL of the text will be raster, but those new pixels will be masked by the converted-to-paths text.
If the text is larger than ~20 pt and you do not have too much text, there is nothing to be said against this situation.

You should try to avoid placing your main text-flow under pixel-transparency, though.

    That's good to know.

although I would not be too thrilled by having text turned to outlines.

I still be keeping my text on top.

too thrilled by having text turned to outlines

If the text is large enough and/or hte resolution of your printer is high enough this is nothing to worry about.

I still be keeping my text on top.

That is undoubtedly a very good idea.

this is true going to print, but when viewing pdfs the type to outlines can look rather bad if just part of the type is covered.

This is always why I follow the type on top rule.
