Hypenation by syllables in InDesign 2.0.1
Our publishing department is in the process of publishing a rather extensive book on electricity. How do we set the character hypenation screen to follow the dictionary rather than just the number of characters? For example, if we have a sentence that that flows to the next line on the word "devices," InDesign hypenates it as "devic-es," which is not by syllables. How can we set it to hypenate the word as "de-vices." We do not want to change the number of characters to "2" because then every word would be hypenated li-ke that. We just want to follow the dictionary.
Is there a plug-in that we would use? Or do we change it somewhere in the menus?
Here are the stats for our computer:
InDesign 2.0.1
Windows 2000 Professional
Thank you for your assistance.

By indicating what you want in the dictionary, like de~vi~ces. Go Edit->Dictionary.

Re: Hypenation by syllables in InDesign 2.0.1
A note on the hyphenation controls - setting the minimum number of characters at two doesn't mean ID will break all words after two letters (which is what your post indicates to me) - it just means that words will break at two letters if ID's dictionary or hyphenation rules indicate that to be an acceptable break. As you have discovered, however, this is no guarantee that you won't need to tweak the dictionary, as George has indicated.
