Hyphenation in XML export
I notice that InDesign CS (3.0.1) performs hyphenation in the XML export file. I wonder why and how can I turn it off?

Re: Hyphenation in XML export
Allen,
InDesign will export a variety of control characters into the XML output stream--including hyphens. There's no way to turn this off (sadly) so you need to clean them up after the fact. We have a whole host of search and replace routines we run on these files for this reason.

Re: Hyphenation in XML export
Good grief: is that really true? I'm still working on how to do my XML export, and hadn't yet spotted this.
With ID 1.5, I used to remove all discretionary hyphens before XML export (using the Woodwing plugin). But are you talking about the hyphens that ID applies itself? They are really exported?
I can't imagine how you could remove them, if they are: how could you possibly differentiate them from normal hyphens? Or do they come out as a different (unicode?) character?

Re: Hyphenation in XML export
Phil,
Thanks for pointing it out. I didn't realize there were other control characters.
For anyone's curiosity, the hyphens I was talking about are represented as unicode combination "" in the XML file. It was introduced by importing a MS Word file containing the-end-of-line hyphenations into InDesign. What's interesting is that the InDesign file does not show the hyphens, until I export the XML file. They are not the regular hyphen caracter (-), but the control character combination above.

Re: Hyphenation in XML export
In my experience this stuff is relatively easy to clean up after export but in my opinion these characters shouldn't be there to begin with. I think Adobe engineers are more concerned with importing XML back into InDesign than supporting HTML workflows. FrameMaker offers wonderful control over special character export. Why not InDesign?
