book, dl the server, and am set to learn as much as possible, what had me
concerned is that if they drop cf with the merger in adobe after i go through
this learning curve, but will cross that bridge when and if it happens. i will

OK, I am not going to go very deep with this. If you dl'ed it your fine, your
not out any money. You bought a book, 60 bucks is not anything, virtually not
out any money either. The thing is, none of us know what WILL happen, federal
regulations prevent that. The deal will not be finalized until October, then we
will all know. If we knew now, someone would be going to jail, just like the
KMart lady, she ran her mouth and got busted, and went to jail. You do what you
have to do, either go for it or abandon your plans of learning CF. I personally
am using it more now than anytime in the past. You just do what you feel is
best, asking your opinion on what you should do here will get many different
responses, especially with the trolls(shall I mention the names?). I myself use
everything, php, asp, net, but due to the speed of development I lean towards
CF 95% of the time. But everyone has their opinion, my advice is to do what you
feel is right, not what "we" say you should do. Even if CF is dropped, there is
already open source CF servers out there, they are behind some but it will
advance if Adobe abandons it. These questions keep coming up, and are a waste
of time actually, just read the previous posts, and form your own opinion as to
what you should or should not do.

is featured prominently in the "Enterprise Software" section (pages 8
and 11 specifically) of a recently-released investor relations document
from Adobe:
http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/invrelations/pdfs/ADBE_MACR_Presentation.pdf
As the other poster said, no one knows for sure what will happen, but
if Adobe did have any plans of ditching CF I suspect they'd just stay
mute on the subject instead of sticking the CF icon in their investor
document.

Trolls - means "people with a different opinion that runs contrary to what I
want said about my precious coldfusion. "
In short, yes, it is bad time to be learning coldfusion in a few ways.
First up, the instability of the whole buyouut situation. Secondly, the low
adoption rate of coldfusion in the industrt (no doubt a contributing factor
in why MM were bought out in the first place).
I could rant and show all teh statistics that point toward coldfusion being
the least used server technology with the least likley chance of gaining you
some marketable skills, but you can do the reesearch yourself I guess. What
yoo have to weigh up is what you want of coldfusion? If you looking to boost
your career and get into web development for a living, coldfusion would be
most peoples last choice (as figres will show). However, if you want a real
gentle intro to programming concepts an dacknowledge that cf will be the
first of a few programming languages you may need to learn, cf will be fine,
even if it does dissapear in a year or so (which I think it will)
Watch out for hosting too - cf is not as widely installled as the mainstream
server technologies so its a bit hard to get competetive hosting, qulaity
and cost. Also, if you are building a large mission critical app, you need
to be ceratin tha there is coldfusion talent around to help out later if
needs be. Many organisations don't consider cf a viable technology based
purely on the relatively small talent pool of developers.
You are not wasting your time learning it though, you are learning to build
web applications, thats good, and lots of this stuff is directly
transferrable to other web dev languages.
Good luck!!

Aw c'mon man, I thought I did real good there! Threw a few positives in
there for balance and still pointed a few of my concerns in a way that
wasn't quoting "as fact". I thought I was rather well behaved.
Thats not fair, I thought you guys belived in rehabilitation? Be fair, I'm
only half the troll I used to be, and with a bit of love and support could
make a full recovery.

Re: i hope i am going in....
You know, Matt, I am entirely open to the idea that coldfusion may well
survive and make some kind of major recovery. I am in an environment and
location where attitude and experience points contrary to this, but your
insight from US and your own experinces has convinced me that the world
doesn't just comprise of what I can see. I am not overly optimistic, mind
you, but I have at least begun to listen to what you have to say.
Although, why you waste your time with a complete twat like me is beyond me.
Perhaps you knew if you chipped away long enough it maight pay off? Or
perhaps you just don't like complete twats.
