If you're on Windows you can open the Start Menu then choose Run and
type in:

charmap

A window pops up containing all special characters from all the Fonts
installed on your system. You can select each Font seperately. Some
characters cannot be chosen with shortcut keys however there is always
the Copy button available.
From the Charmap you can search for and select the character you want.
Multiple characters at once are possible.

In Fireworks just use Edit > Paste to paste the character.

Eleanor, don't forget about that little "Character Map" application you've
got together with your Windows. Press "Start" button, go for "Run...", type
"charmap" in and press enter. You'll see the CharMap window, allowing to
choose font\language, then visually select the character and copy it to the
clipboard.

P.S. funny enough, the one sent by Linda looked like Cyrillic "d" on my
machine. So you better do the job using charmap on *your* machine -
non-ASCII characters does not always get transmitted right via
e-something...
