I need help with filling a shape with color.

I am a rather unskilled user of Illustrator. I opened a shape that was in .dxf format in Illustrator 10. I need to fill different parts of the shape with color. I have tried just about every thing. Would someone please explain the steps necessary from start to finish how to fill the shape? I can change the line color that makes up the shape, but I can not get it to solid fill. Please Help!!!

your shape seems to be not one path, it consists of many single strokes. Therefore you cannot fill it. Maybe this action will help you?

95 % is a good rate. The reason why 5 % failed is that it is a *zero tolerance method*. The paths have to touch or overlap exactly, otherwise a Pathfinder error message appears. A solution that allows you to modify tolerances would be Rick Johnsons Plugin Concatenate.
