This is how I do it. 1. Open new document. 2. Click on "Place." When the window opens, go to where your Word Document file is located. 3. Click on the filename. Make sure the "Show Option" box is checked. 4. Another screen might appear. Just check the appropriate items and then OK.
If you are using Word 2003, it will bring the file in with no problem. If you encounter a error message, go into Word and under Save AS, choose the RTF(Rich text file)option. If you want, give the file a different or similar name, so you won't choose the Word document file. Then repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 using the RTF file you just saved.
InDesign should bring in the file with no problem. You may have to make some adjustment, but it is easy. I created my client's Employee Handbook and Business Plan projects using InDesign CS from files I created in Word 2003.

paste can result in unwanted Paragraph styles being brought over.
I always cut and paste from Word into Notepad/PFE, then from there to
InDesign.
That strips the font information and pastes into InDesign with the
selected Paragraph style.

PFE is Programmer's File Editor (freeware) also a plain text editor

which I have used for the last 10 years in preference to notepad.
