iBook CD Recording Issue - Mac Applications & Software

A friend has an iBook running 9.2.2. She makes backups of her data onto CD and when she tries to open the CD in her iMac, the CD will not mount. It mounts in other macs in her office. And, all other CDs will mount in the iMac. Where might the compatability issue lie? Cheers... Bob...

Most often, the problem here lies with the brand of blank CD.

Many brands of blank CD, chief among them being Memorex, will not work reliably
in all CD-ROM or audio CD drives.

From my own experience, I've found that TDK and Verbatim are among the best
brands for blank CDs, Memorex and "no-name" brands among the worst.

I'll ditto that. Marginal optical media can be a problem. I bought an
after-market Pioneer DVR-104 that came with some media. Burned fine.
Reads fine - in a Pioneer DVR-104 drive (not mine specifically...I've
had a chance to try others). Doesn't read in any other drive I've tried
    yet.

Yes, and another issue is the burn speed. She might try burning the CD at a
much slower rate. The resultant CD might be read easier by the obstinate CD
    drive.

The mostly likely problem is the media being used. You don't mention how
old the iMac is, but I'm willing to bet it is one of the older ones.
Older CD-Drives prefer very reflective media and often don't like
    re-writeable media.

I generally stick we Verbatim & Sony media - I've made very few coasters
    with those two brands.

Note: look for media that is bright, not dark blue.

What brand was that? I'd like to make sure to avoid it.

In my SuperDrive (a DVR-104), I have successfully burned to Imation,
Memorex, the Apple-brand blanks they included with the computer, and
generic no-name media (manufactured by CMC, if that helps). I haven't
seen any compatibility problems with other computers or audio players.
