iChatDV & below-spec Macs - Mac Applications & Software

Tried installing iChatDV to use with my DV camcorder yesterday onto my iBook 500 on the hopes that the sys reqs weren't a hard-stop. Seems the reqs are and iChat told me quite bluntly that my computer wouldn't do pictures. The specs say a 600 MHz G3 is the minimum, so by that measure I'm just out of the ballgame. My question is whether this is truly a processor-limiting event or if it's also the video card. My iBook doesn't do Quartz Extreme, and I have to think that's helping with the video somehow. Default iChatDV & below-spec Macs

Tried installing iChatDV to use with my DV camcorder yesterday onto my
iBook 500 on the hopes that the sys reqs weren't a hard-stop. Seems
the reqs are and iChat told me quite bluntly that my computer wouldn't
do pictures. The specs say a 600 MHz G3 is the minimum, so by that
measure I'm just out of the ballgame.

My question is whether this is truly a processor-limiting event or if
it's also the video card. My iBook doesn't do Quartz Extreme, and I
have to think that's helping with the video somehow. Apple has, in
the past, used processor speed to represent a *configuration* (every
Mac with 600 MHz G3 or above has 16+ megs of VRAM, I *think*), and
wonder if that's going on here.

That said, if anyone has any luck hacking iChatDV to work with
below-spec Macs, I'd be interested to hear how it was done. If I get
iChatDV that's 17% slower (ie, it's not a Quartz Extreme issue), I'd
still like to give it a try.

xlr8yourmac.com is compiling user experiences on hacking iChat AV onto
unsupported Macs. Haven't read it, but should be what you're looking for.

Absolutely right. Just stumbled over that myself last night. Mike B.
has a great site.

Here's the page: http://xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/ichatAV_beta_feedback.html#storytop

Also worth noting (saw on the site above)... a kbase article saying
G3's & iChatAV don't currently work with DV camcorders:

Thanks!
