Default "ICS" ping works from second computer, ie doesn't

Hi, I am having a problem with networking my home computers. The
first computer is running XP Home Edition, the second computer is
running XP Professional Edition. I have 2 NICS in the 1st computer, 1
nic has a public ip address, the other nic has an address of
192.168.0.1; everything on that computer is working fine (ping, ie,
email). The second computer is connected to the 1st computer via a
x-over cable and it has received an ip address via DHCP of
192.168.0.179. Ping works great from the second computer, I can ping
a hostname (cnn.com), as well as an ip address outside of my LAN. For
some reason I cannot get internet explorer to work - I keep getting
the error that states the web page cannot be displayed, or internet
explorer could not open the search page. Any ideas why? I have run
the wizard on both computers several times, I have manually configured
DNS on both computers. I have turned on and off the firewall on the
first NIC of the 1st computer, nothing seems to work. If anyone could
help, I would appreciate it a ton.

Are you sharing a DSL connection that uses PPP Over Ethernet (PPPoE)?
If so, you've hit a bug in Windows XP. Here are some possible fixes.
Any one of them should solve the problem:

1. Install Windows XP Service Pack 1 on the ICS host computer.

2. Find the right MTU setting on the client computers, as shown here:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107

and then make the setting manually on the client computers, or use
DrTCP to make it:

3. Download the free RASPPPoE program and install it on the host
computer. Use it instead of XP's PPPoE program. Details at these
