Default ID CS 2 Aligning type to the top

    G4 iBook, OS 10.4.7, InDesign CS2 version 4.0.3

I'm afraid I don't know the right terminology for what I want to do, but I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm designing a CD cover and I want the name of the band to align to the top of the frame - meaning, have the tops of all the letters be justified with each other rather than the baseline. Since I can't figure out the right lingo for what I want to do I'm having trouble looking it up in the help, my books, or the fora.

    Can someone help me out?

    Thanks!

    1 - OBJECT Menu>Text Frame Options (COMMAND B on a Mac)>Vertical Justification>align TOP

2- If need be you can also use Baseline Shift, which appears as one of the options on the top tool bar for Character Formatting (press the "A" top left), when the type is selected.

And make sure you don't have it set for locking to baseline.

Where do I remove the setting for locking to baseline?

Vertical justification does not do what I want (actually does not appear to have any effect on my text), and the baseline shift moves the entire line up, but does not make the tops of the letters even with each other.

I'm trying to get it so that the lower case letters are raised up to be even with the tops of the capital letters.

    Thanks!

Using with the TYPE TOOL, select ONE letter at a time, and then move it up using baseline shift.
(There's no automatic function to do what you want to all letters simultaneously)

Depending the amount of text you migth have, you could change the first base line to x-height on the Text Frame Option window/Baseline Options, and then select individually your cap letters and shift then dwon. You could even create a character style once you have one the way you want so you can apply to the others fast.

Make a copy of your text frame. Now Create Outlines of the type. Release Compound Paths (if you have single letters that use compound paths, you'll have to use the Pathfinder palette to restore the knock-outs). Select all shapes and Align To Top using the Align palette.
