ID CS - Gradient Type
I am attempting to fill a 40 point headline with a gradient.
I converted the type to outlines and selected it with the text tool, but when I click different gradients, the only thing that changes are the stroke and fill icons in the toolbox but not the type.
Apparently I got it right one time by accident and as a workaround, I paste that same headline where ever I need it and then edit the text and the color. It would be great if I can do it from scratch in the future!
Thank you much,
Jamie

Not possible. Do you mean you outlined the text? IOW, applied a stroke?

I selected the type with the text tool and clicked <TYPE> <CREATE OUTLINES>.

Re: ID CS - Gradient Type
Rob, have you tried this?
I can create type, select it, create outlines, select it with pointer or text tool and change the colour etc....
The difference between the states is that after selecting the outlined type with the text tool, (which is fiddly and clunky, imho) is that when selected with text tool, it converts back into text, can be changed and re-converted to outlines. It does not remain as outlines when selected by text tool.
I even filled with a gradient and added some characters after converting to outlines, BUT...when it is text on a path, I could not reselect the chars, only the path where I could add characters and the converted bit of text was an inline object. Outlined text on a path would not undo like standard outlined text.
Jamie, you should be able to convert to outlines, colour, select and copy and paste using the text tool if you treat the text object like an inline linked item. Make sure you try the various tools and modes of selecting and colouring, like you would with a bitmap graphic, there is a mode to colour the box and frame and a mode to colour the contents etc....

How do you do this?
Pure alchemy...
Once converted to outline the paths stay paths in my experince. You can select them the way you can select any inline graphic, but surely you cannot correct any typos or similar?

You'd have to be a real wiz with the pen tool. <g>

Re: ID CS - Gradient Type
Phil,
What you're describing is incredible. It certainly doesn't jibe with my experience. In order to do what you describe, I wrote two scripts, one to convert text to outlines, saving enough information with the outlined text so that the second script could convert back to the original text. As far as I know, this is the only way to work this process.
Converted text does become an inline graphic, and it is indeed possible to select it with the text tool. You can then "convert" it back to text by retyping (just as typing over a text selection replaces the selection with what you type).

Yup...if you converted it by highlighting it with a frame containing
other text.
