ID CS Windows - Typing accented characters - Adobe Indesign Windows

I'm trying to edit a doent with many references to French and German names. I'm quite used to typing accents using various keyboard shortcuts - the Alt Gr key and so on. None of them seem to work in InDesign. I've looked in the help files and searched on the forums - is there something I'm missing - some preference that isn't set? Thanks in advance...

InDesign has a substantial list of its own keyboard shortcuts, so those that
you are used to working with in other programmes are probably re-assigned.
Use of the Alt+ Numerical keypad, however, should give you all the accented
    characters.

    Dave,

Accented characters (like etc) are very easily done in Indesign or any other application if you set Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Regional Options > Languages > Details > to (or ADD) English . United Sates - International.

This International settings allow to type accents by typing for instance ' followed by e to produce
