I'd just like to page through a document...
I'm using ID CS. The only way I've found to page through a document, without strange side effects, has been to use the Go To Next/Previous Frame commands.
For some reason, however (and I'm sure there's some esoteric programming philosophy behind it, as there is behind everything Adobe), these commands work only when the Text tool is selected.
I can even use the Selection tool to select a frame---which, in case the presently-viewed frame wasn't good enough---you'd think would qualify as a bearing for the "next" or "previous" frame. But no; the command does nothing.
Anyone know why? And is there another way to reliably and consistently page through a document without it changing the zoom level, changing the page's horizontal position, causing the computer to begin playing "I Wish I'd Met the Kaiser," etc.?
By "paging through," I mean a page at a time, a screen at a time---I'm not picky, as long as I get to see everything and I don't have to select a particular tool each time to do it. (Is that asking too much?)
Thanks, Andy

(By the way, I'd edited that message to make it considerably shorter, more readable, and better-punctuated---but by the time my kids decided to stop distracting me, my 30 minutes of editing privileges had expired and the "Edit" command I saw on my screen had become a sadistic illusion.)

Re: I'd just like to page through a document...
Robert: Tried that. It changes the zoom level to fit the entire page, or the entire spread, or something. Which, in my case---1280x1024 screen resolution and 50-year-old eyes---means "text no longer visible."
All I want to do is see the rest of the current page. And I'd like to do it without hunting for, clicking, and dragging tiny scrollbars (which, as often as not, are hidden under palettes), or wearing out my mouse wheel and the joints of my index finger.
Is there no way to simply go to the Next Screen of the Thing You're Looking At? (Maybe they couldn't fit that on a menu...?)

Most of us use the Hand tool. The quickest way to get it is Alt + Space Bar and drag.

Re: I'd just like to page through a document...
ALT+ Page up/down doesn't change the zoom level for me, but it does put the
focus on the centre of the spread - as does next/previous page, with the
focus on the centre of the page. But then, how would you expect InDesign to
know that when you're viewing the bottom right of page 3 that you want to
jump to the top left of page 4?
If you just want to read a story that continues over multiple pages, why not
select it in story editor and read through it there? You can select the
optimum viewing behaviour (24 pt Times for my 50+ tired old eyes).

Ack! [crossing self] Grope for the mouse and perform repetitive rowing actions, just to page through a document? Has it come to this, after all our advances in computer technology?
I opened a document in FrameMaker today to see how I'd handled a formatting issue in a previous, same-style document. How refreshing it was to press PageUp/PageDown, and see each page appear, its top neatly aligned with the top of the document's window, its size and horizontal position unchanged.
I'd even settle for Word-style PageUp/PageDown, a screenful at a time.
Surely there must be a way.

Yes, I'm glad to hear someone else is going blind. :?) But no, I want to see the page---linebreaks, relations between elements, that sort of picky stuff; not just the copy.

No trick question. What you're expecting is for InDesign to make some
relationship between the display and a continuing text thread, so that when
you turn the page from focusing on the bottom right of page three, InDesign
follows the text thread and gives you a focus on wherever it's continued on
page 4.
I'm not aware of anything that does that, but I guess it would be neat
feature. Could get a little tricky, however, if you got one of those
'continued on page 29' stories on page 1.

Re: I'd just like to page through a document...
That's fine as far as it goes Stu, but if you've zoomed in on a part of a
page, Ctrl Pg Dn doesn't take you to that same zoom position, it gives you a
slice out of the centre.

Re: I'd just like to page through a document...
No-one's mentioned the Navigator palette. You can quite easily combine that
with Ctrl Pg Up/Down and just drag the little rectangle to the part of the
page you want each time.

Re: I'd just like to page through a document...
I do this using the text tool and the arrow keys - that way, I follow the
text threads, and stay at the same zoom. Is that what you mean? Or did I
miss too? I'm also annoyed that page-up/page-down don't take you to the top
of the page ... why on earth doesn't it?

Re: I'd just like to page through a document...
I am mystified by all these answers. Either I don't understand your question, or I am a blithering idiot. Let's say you have a ten-page document. You are viewing all of page one on the screen, and you would like to page through the rest of the document, a full page at a time. For me, Shift-PgDn / Shift-PgUp does this. No zooming. No frame threading. Just one full page at a time.
You don't specify your platform. I am on WinXP.
What have I missed?

Re: I'd just like to page through a document...
David,
Without reading the previous 13 posts, I would guess that yours is the simple, default answer. Nonetheless, I have changed my shortcuts to use PageUp and PageDown, period.
Peggy,
Once you get used to how ID works, I think the annoyance will fade. And if it doesn't, you too can change the shortcuts and hence much of the behaviour to suit yourself. You have the power <g>

Well, I presume that ID knows where its own text threads go, if that's what you mean. But I wasn't asking for anything so fancy. I'd simply like to press a key or key-combo to go to the next spread, and see the top of that spread aligned with the top of its window. (If I couldn't see the entire thing, and wanted to, I'd bravely assume responsibility and adjust the zoom as required.)
David Lampel> Either I don't understand your question, or I am a blithering

That's cool, David. It does exactly what you said.
But wait! David's suggestion has inspired me to try other combinations. It turns out that Alt+PageUp/PageDn does EXACTLY what I had in mind. And whaddaya know, that's what Bob Levine suggested way back at the top of this thread---but I was too miffed over not being allowed to edit my initial post that didn't see his. Sheesh.
Okay, thanks, everybody.
Spread-viewingly, A.

"It turns out that Alt+PageUp/PageDn does EXACTLY what I had in mind."
Are you sure?
I thought you were looking for a way to follow a story when the display is
zoomed in to part of a page. Alt+Pg Up/Down doesn't do that. It gives you
the next spread/page with the focus on a slice through the centre,
regardless of where you were on the previous page. At least it does here.
Am I not seeing things right?
