Ideas about installing IBM/Hitachi 36GB HDD (146Z10) drive in old C10?
Gents;
We have an old C10 that we use for development (its a workhorse).
Currently we have a CDROM (ID=5), an 8mm Tape drive (ID=4) and hdisk0
(ID=0). We setup this new drive as ID=1 and FORCE SE=on and mounted
it in the system connected to the SCSI cable. The system boots fine
but we cannot see the new drive. If we run lsdev -C|grep hdisk or
even lsdev -C |grep 00-00-0S (the scsi devices) it is not shown. When
we run cfgmgr is finds nothing new.
Any ideas as to what we may be missing?
Thanks in advance.

however, recently I had a similar problem with those drives in a 43P-150.
I thought I did everything right, only to discover that I set ID=8 instead of
ID=1 :-(

to the C10's internal SCSI cable?
I got the following drive working okay with a C10
# lscfg -vl hdisk2
DEVICE LOCATION DESCRIPTION
hdisk2 00-00-0S-2,0 16 Bit SCSI Disk Drive (9100 MB)
Manufacturer................IBM
Machine Type and Model......DDYS-T09170M
FRU Number..................07N3784
ROS Level and ID............53395241
It was originally the bundled drive with my 43P260 but was too small so
I moved it onto the C10.
I've also used the bigger version (DDYS-T36950M) of this model drive
with my C10.
Both my drives have a SCA interface and are installed in external Sun
Unipack disk case.

Re: Ideas about installing IBM/Hitachi 36GB HDD (146Z10) drive in old C10?
To the two responders:
I downloaded the installation instruction pdf's from hgst.com site
(hitachi's) which shows the jump pins in detail along with what each
setting means. The drive is a U320 with a 68 pin SCSI 3 connector. I
used a ICA50 to 68pin adapter to connect the cable to it (same as with
hdisk0). I've double checked the ID setting (thrice) and tried it in
auto-detect mode as well as forcing SE mode. The stock internal scsi
cable on the C10 has five connectors... 1 for the planar board
connections, four drive connectors and a terminator on the free end.
The hdisk0 is the last drive on the chain and it works fine.
I'll still be digging but any more thoughts appreciated.

But I don't have them connected to the onboard SCSI, they are connected
to a Fast/Wide SCSI-2 /A from a PS/2 (Corvette) in Slot 1. Works great.
A DDRS 9G with 50pin SCSI is running on onboard SCSI in a 7006-42T,
which has same controller as the 7009-C10/C20 onboard.

Hmm, I had problems with the DNES as only drive when the SE-force jumper>>>>>>

was set. Without jumper the autodetection worked?!?
But a 18G DMVS didn't work. Perhaps the Other SCSI Disk driver does not
support such large disk on old machines? Dunno.

RS6k drive and worked correctly as an "Other SCSI Disk".
Perhaps the O/P's Hitachi drive is just too "new". Is a U160 drive going
to work in a C10?

Thanks for all the thoughts. The new drive is a u320 drive and the OS
version is 5.1 ML03. Believe it or not, Hitachi's tech support stated
that "I had to buy a drive directly from IBM for it to work". Yeah,
right!
I will still try various combinations and most certainly RobH's
suggestion about trying the drive on a different system (we have
others).
However, today I am receiving the same model drive (Hitachi 36G) with
an 80 pin SCA2 connector for attachment to a disk carrier to install
in our B50 (which is quite new). we'll see if that works and I'll
keep you posted.
Until then, if any of you have a sudden "brain cramp" of a
suggestion... please post it?
Thanks
Bob
