Idle time - Linux / Unix Administration

Hi, How can I find out how long a process has been idle? Say a user is using a license and after using it for a while, he just keeps it idle and goes for home / vacation. How do I find out the usage time and idle time? is there any unix built-in for this? TIA, -Al -- Using M2, Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/m2/...

You may possibly use the ps utility to help you with this.
Using the STIME and TIME output formats (with the -o flag) will
give you the starting time and ulative execution time for
the process. A process with an early STIME and a high TIME is
a long-running high-CPU process. A process with an early STIME
and a *low* TIME is a long-running low-CPU process (possibly
because it isn't doing very much, but also possibly because the
system is very loaded).

A better idea would be to interface with the license deamon, if
possible (and if there is one).

No, there is nothing in "Unix" that does this for you.
