I'm not sure how technical you are... if you need more info, feel free
    to ask.

What you need to do is check the permissions on IE's preferences file.
If they're all correct, the best solution is just to delete it. IE will
    recreate it.

You might also have to do the same with the general Internet preferences
file... IE stores some stuff in there, too.

    Hi Stephen,

    Thanks. I appreciate the offer.
I'm new to OS X and don't know anything about permissions.

These are the only Explorer preferences I've found:

    Mac HD/system folder/preferences/Explorer/
    Download Cache
    Downloads.html
    Favorites.html
    History.html
    Temporary Files
    Toolbar.xml

    Mac HD/users/charlie/library/preferences/Explorer/
    Download Cache
    Downloads.html
    English.Toolbar.xml
    Favorites.html
    History.html
    Temporary Files

These don't appear the be the preferences that are giving me trouble.
My history and favorites are remembered.

I just deleted the general internet preferences file:
    Mac HD/system folder/preferences/internet/

I've quit and restarted IE twice and it has retained the settings. No
    new Internet preferences was created.

So far, so good. I'll go to the trouble of entering my autofill profile
for the umteenth time and hope for the best. The ultimate test, I guess
will be when I reboot the computer. I don't feel like doing that now.

    Many thanks!!!
I'll be sure and post to this thread again if i have more preferences
    problems.

    Stephen,
That seemed to do it. I just rebooted and the prefs are still there.
    Thanks again.

Huh. In theory, the preferences you listed aren't used by the 10.x
version of IE. I suppose they tried to be smart and import the old 9.x
preferences and didn't get it quite right.

    Glad you got it. :)

It's really strange. I spoke too soon.
I was elated when it came up with a blank home page and TV Guide didn't
    have ads jumping around.
It remembered everything but my auto fill form. ;(
That's the most important part since it's the most hassle and I
occasionally change the other settings when I want to see a flash site
or occasionally something with animated gifs.

Maybe after I get more familiar with X, I should put my X version of IE
along with it's bookmarks (favorites) on a CD and delete all copies of
IE on all my hard drives. Then reinstall IE.

Are you also using Entourage? If so, there is a known bug which
explains what you are seeing. Entourage and Explorer try to access the
same preference settings and they get in each other's way. The
solution, in this case, is to quit both applications. Open Explorer,
modify its preferences, and quit. Then try running with both apps open
(but don't edit prefs in one without closing the other).
