Illustrator 10.0.3 Updater (Win2k) - Adobe Illustrator Windows

Topic Illustrator 10.0.3 Updater bbrk525 - 02:17pm Apr 13, 2004 Pacific When I attempt to run the 10.0.3 updater I get as far as accepting the licensing agreement. When I click on accept a message pops up telling me that the updater can't find Illustrator 10 in the default location - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Illustrator 10\Support Files\Contents\Windows - and to try to find it myself. Unfortunately the executable is located in the default location and there is no way to override the installer. What do I need to do?...

Don't use the Adobe OnLine for this. go to: <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=27&platform=Windows> and download (after registering) the 10.0.3 English update and then once downloaded, go to where you stored it and click the .exe file to install.

    Bob,

That's the process I used for the initial download. I deleted the files from the folder and repeated the process with the same results. Any other ideas?

What did you use as the installation file? It should be "ai10_0_3en.exe". You do have Illustrator 10.0 or 10.0.2 installed, don't you? (If you have version 10.0.1 installed you have to first uninstall that and reinstall just plain 10.0. If you have version 10.0.2 installed then just continue with install of 10.0.3. If you have XP Pro you must have full administrative rights to install. Same if you are using Win2000. Disable any virus scan you might be using, and particularly if using anything by Norton.

    Bob,

That's the installer I used. I'm running v10.0 right now. As far as I can tell I've got full local admin rights as I've never had a problem with updates for any other application (including Photoshop and previous versions of Illustrator). About the only thing I can't do is diable our Norton's Corporate Addition. That's grayed out. Can a restart in safe mode and do the install successfully?

Yes, indeed give Safe Mode a try. I suspect if you can't disable Norton, that's the cause of your problem. It's very invasive on many programs and especially Adobe products and particularly upon installation functions.

    Bob,

No luck in Safe mode. It still tells me that the executable is not found in the default location. I remember in my searches that there was a problem with early Mac versions of Illustrator 10 similar to this but that it was corrected in later releases of 10. Could it be that this applies to Windows versions as well?

Although I'm now using Illustrator CS, I did download and never had a problem installing version 10.0.3 update. But, I also wouldn't have Norton on my system (personal choice) either, and so can't duplicate your problem. You can't Control Alt Delete and then turn off Norton in Processes? Have you asked your IT to install it?

    Bob,

I've been doing a little poking around. I pulled up the properties of the Ilustrator executable found in the default location. It says its version 10.0.128.0. I don't know if this would fall under the un-updateable version 10.0.1 or not. What do you think?

    Bob,

We finally figured it out. When Illustrator was originally loaded via SMS they had scripted it using a slightly different path than an install from a CD would have handled it. The default path to the executable is
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 10\Support Files\Contents\Windows

When our IT group scripted it they placed the path at
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Illustrator 10\Support Files\Contents\Windows

Notice the lack of the word Adobe? I ended up renaming the offending folder and then successfully ran the updater after which I named the folder back so that it matches whats in the registry. This is an odd one to remember. Thanks for your help.

Don't you just love it when they do that? (my wife is an IT, but she doesn't do that<g>) Glad you got things working.
