Illustrator 10.0.3 crashes on startup

I fear you did something very bad. You are not supposed to trash any folder from that AI Folder you are only supposed to open the plug ins folder then the extension folder within that and in the extension there is a plug in ( not a Folder) called Adobe Online
you are only suppose to trash that file.

Here is a screen shot now your plug ins will have AI 10 icons mine has AI CS icons because I am working in OS 10.2.8 and have AI CS installed as well.

You might have to reinstall AI and update to 10.0.3 and then trash the plug in.

Once you have this properly done you go to the Users/Username/Library/Preferences and the Adobe Illustrator Preferences 10 folder this time it is a folder.

Then launch AI 10 and al will be fine!

Whoops! Well I can still start it by holding the shift key and get the same two messages about drop shadow as I posted earlier today....

Ok so I am happy to reinstall but I don't think I need to. It was the plugin cache that I trashed and the preferences with in the Adobe Illustrator folder. Also I do have 10.0.3

Thanks for the screen shot of the folder, yes I think I get it. So if you remove the "Adobe Online" from the extentions folder, it won't go online during startup and look for a none existent updates and get stuck in beach ball mode due to that problem you mentioned earlier in the thread. Bye the way, my folder looks like that screen shot!

If you follow that... anyway I understand that I wont loose any functionality, once I 86 that extension

I understand this is a path to a folder but what am I suppost to do once I am there?

Should I trash that folder? That is the folder that contains the above iteems that I trashed, the only thing I left was color settings.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem you are experiencing. I went to the Adobe support page and followed each of their "remedial" solutions, and nothing works (removing prefs file, reinstalling, etc.). Then I installed Illustrator 10.0.3 on a second mac (Powerbook running OS 10.3), and the same problem occurs ("unexpectedly quit").

One added tidbit, I had installed Illustrator on my desktop G4 mac when the previous OS was installed and it DID run OK. The trouble seems to have started after upgrading the OS to 10.3.

Is anybody listening to this thread?? Seems to be a common problem.

Did you trash the Adobe Online plugin from the Illustrator Extensions folder, as well? And do you have Norton Antivirus?

I removed ALL the preferences in the Illustrator folder in the Library directory of my home directory. Yes, I have Norton antivirus. To be doubly sure, I updated the antivirus definitions and reran a scan on Illustrator. Clean bill of health!

Disable Norton Antivirus it conflicts with Illustrator on OSX. Some even say disabling it isn't enough. They say remove it.

I disabled Norton Antivirus as you said and I still get the "unexpectedly quit" reaction on startup.

You can't be serious about Norton can you? Is either Norton or Adobe aware and/or working on this? Our University (Wisconsin) supports Norton for campus wide mac and pc systems, and they don't have any trubles the likes of which I indicate reported for any other systems. And AI is widely used on campus.

Note my earlier message stating that AI DID open OK before I updated to OS X.3.3. I'm getting discouraged!

All I know is what I read here in this forum. I do not have OSX yet, but I'm keeping track so that when I do switch over it hopefully wont be too stressful.

Do a search on this forum for Norton, everyone says it's got to go. I also run Norton but I'm on a G-4 OS9.2.2 and it runs fine with AI10.03.

You did say you definately trashed the Adobe Online pluggin in the Illustrator extensions folder? You keep mentioning the preferences, but not the pluggin. This is not a preference it's a pluggin.

Thanks, I hadn't removed the AI online in the Extensions folder, as you suggested. Once I did this, I'm now able to open AI! AND, this is on the machine with Norton Antivirus running.

Seems to have fixed the problem; profuse thanks. :-) I don't even want to ask why, but wll continue to follow this thread to see what else transpires.

Did any of these suggestions work yet. I have been struggling with the same problem and with all my Adobe Creative Suite applications. What's the solution for all applications? I just purchased a G4 w/10.3 installed and loaded the Creative suite and haven't been able to use the damn thing. Nothing like investing a couple of $K and have it not work.

Like Cynthia and Diane, I'm experiencing the same problem with Illustrator CS.

It begins the boot process, gets to fonts (Updating font menu 90%), and it quits.

Thus far, I've:
* tried eliminating a number of files that Illustrator generates at start-up.
* removed Illustrator's font package.
* deleted AI Online.
* removed the Extensions folder and that got Illustrator a bit further along (actually saw the tool menu) before it quit.

All the other applications in Creative Suite work fine.

I'm on a G5 running OS 10.3.3.

Di you have Spell Catcher? This could be the problem of mismatched RAM as well.

Ha! I don't know what happened to change things but Illustrator is running. The keyboard short-cuts don't work but the application is running.

Thinking the problem might be fonts, I removed (temporarily) the fonts from the user collection and deleted Illustrator's pref file. No change. Put the fonts back, went on to other tasks, tried Illustrator again and it booted up without a complaint.

Keep the faith. There's hope. At least for the moment. :o)
