Default Illustrator 10.0.3 on Mac OSX 10.3.3

No matter what I've tried, Separation Setup stays grayed out (unavailable). I've re installed Illustrator twice, checked forums and tried ever test I can think of.
I've just created a very simple new file using two words, each using a different color. I save it, do a page setup to my Postscript, Tektronix color laser printer and even this primitive file will not allow me to print a separation. Composites print fine.

    Any Ideas??

I believe you need to select a printer driver from a PostScript printer.

    Hi David,

I had the same problem, and after reading a few of the comments, still couldn't get to the PPD because the separation setup was still greyed out. Hopefully you've sorted your problem out... but if you are still searching....You need to go to your print setup and select Save file to Postscript and actually save the document somewhere and then go back into the "File drop down menu" separation setup is then accessible to select the necessary PPD etc.. and separations.. Goodluck!

That can't be right, can it?

I'm still on OS9.2.2 and don't have to do that. I go to Print, pull the drop down button to Illustrator and within the separation setup I can change the .ppd from there. But I've never tried to print an .ai file, I've always saved as an .eps. So maybe that is what David is talking about with "Save file to Postscript"? Saving as an .eps file?

I was thinking David ment Save to File.

Does OSX really work the way David says?

Well what I use to do in AI 10 in 10.2.8 is select a postscript printer such as Adobe PDF and print a file or cancel out of print dialog after selecting the postscript printer.
The Separation Set Up is available.
