I,ve now tried everything, including installing Illustrator CS - no difference. Have Trashed Illustrator, created new user account, restarted in safe-boot and re-installed Illustrator - and its fine! I guess there must be something in the main admin user account that clashes with Illustrator, but I'm not able to identify it.
