Illustrator 10...automatic spacing between objects (?)

say I have a scattered polka dot pattern for example.
Is there a way to open up the space between each dot...spread the dots further apart? I need to keep the same location relationship between each dot, and need to keep them the same size.

Can this be done only manually?

If the dots are individual single objects:

Group the dots which make up the pattern. Scale the group to adjust the spacing (yes, this will scale the dots, too).

Ungroup and then use Transform Each to scale the dots back to desired size. Each dot will scale about its own center.

For example:

You like the size and arrangement of the dots, but want to double the space between them. Group; scale to 200%. Ungroup; use TransformEach to scale to 50%.
