illustrator 10 hangs for 5-10 sec after each move

Illustrator 10.0.3 on OS 10.3.2 on a 1GHz PB-G4

after working for a few minutes with Illustrator - i get the spinning beachball for 5-10 secs after every move i do - even pressing the space bar for the move tool and command for the selection tool gives me the beachball...

first thought it might be the clipboard or big files opened in Photoshop, but it does it even without launching PS and having the clipboard empty. Quiting the apps will not fix it - i have to reboot to get rid of the problem (for like 5-15min - it starts again after a while)

I checked if i had corrupted fonts, but that was not the cause...

am i the only one with this problem? It only does this with illustrator - no other app suffers from these symptoms. the only thing in my bag of tricks left is a clean install... but i'm hoping it won't have to come to that...

found something else...

opened a big illustrator file with lotsa text and images and then i got that damn spinning wheel for 1-2min after every move this time. so now i'm wondering if it could have to do with illustrator's cache...?
