Illustrator 10 problems
I have two problems that drive me nuts on a daily basis. First I work using pixels but every file that I work with I have shows the inches on the ruler bar. I have to go to the document setup and even though the dialog box is set to pixels I have to do this.
The other problem is that Illustrator has a habit of creating new files with a series of numbers for the titles. It is the same file but it creates a new one with a new name.
anybody run into this problem?

Re: Illustrator 10 problems
K, I haven't tested this but you may be able to save your startup file located in the plug-ins folder with pixels on the rulers and have that work. Actually , let me know if it does because I'd like to set it to picas. I'm doubting it will take though.
You can hold cntrl and click the ruler origin to set the units without going into preferences too. Think on the PC it's a right-click.
Your second problem isn't exactly clear to me but sounds very reminiscent of Ai 10's problem of saving from OSX to a PC network. It will save the file but it won't show up in your finder. Then it won't let you save the file ever again saying that it's in use. Only a PC set to "show hidden files" is able to view or change it. The fix is to never save to the network, which should be your rule of thumb anyway.

Re: Illustrator 10 problems
Yes, a person in my dept has experienced the number problem you mentioned, but her problem is in 10.0.3 not CS.
I am trying to troubleshoot this issue. This is what happens to her....
She opens the file (tho not every file has this happen, and not every day does this happen) and when it comes up the file has the name trucated and it says "namexxx#98OC.ai" The "#98OC" is the add on from Illustrator. Then she saves the file and it gives the following message "Acrobat PDF File Format is having difficuly. Unable to recover original file". She has not asked it to save a PDF file only a "save as" file. It not only saves that file, but also throws another numbered file in the folder. When she tries to open the #98OC file it tells her "unknown file format. Cannot be opened" and dies on the vine. When she opens up the numbered file it is the file she saved.
So basically when she saves it is saving 2 files, one that cannot be opened with a weird add on title, and the other than can be opened, but was saved as a number file, she did not name as such.
Any ideas???

Re: Illustrator 10 problems
Is she saving directly to a network?

Re: Illustrator 10 problems
the new files that are created open and are the same as the original file. I use a mac. It doesn't ruin the file it just creates a new file that is really annoying.

Re: Illustrator 10 problems
Hi all, I have experience a similar file name changing in since I have moved onto OSX. Is it possible that your file names are longer than the amount of characters that Illustrator recongnises. Working in OSX the file names can be up to 256 characters in total. Illustrator only allows 32 character and will displays files that have more than 32 characters with numbers and symbols.
One of my example “MER8852_WB_Letterhead 2 Spot colour version.ai” becomes MER8852_WB_Letterhead#6022B34.ai
The Illustrator file remains the same but the file name appears different. When you view the file name through a program that recongnises more that 32 characters like Microsoft Word, the original file name re appears. OSX stores that original longer file name.
Then again your problem may be something completely different.
