    Default illustrator 10 sucks

O.K. Here's the deal. I have been using AI 9 and 10, did a little speed test using complex ungrouped vector files b/x the two versions- using pathfinder UNITE-DIVIDE- - MINUS FRONT,ETC. and COMMAND8 (COMPOUND path). bottom line, V9 humiliated 10 by at least doing these processes 20 times faster across the board. Also have some saving weirdness (corrupt files with placed AI Photoshop file links in Ill.10). Too many other crazy things too put into this e-mail. I have tried to get an an answer to this on several occasions to no avail, reckoned I would give it 1 more shot. THX, JD.

When AI 10 first came out, I fought it tooth and nails. Some people may even remember some of my ridiculous rants. I've gotten used to how it works now and it's not too shabby. Give it some time. Don't know what to tell you about the speed differences. I haven't noticed 10 being slow. I feel your pain though. When I was in your shoes it was maddening. Sorry no answers here though.

Why are we talking about AI9 vs AI10? AI CS runs circles around both of them, and has been shipping for months.

I agree with Thomas. I think in search through these forums a person could find many examples of situations where Ill 10's performance is lacking. In my experience the answer (or fix) to many of Ill 10's problems is Ill CS.

Threads complaining about Illy 10 will end around the same time as those about ID vs QX, OS9 vs X, and those wondering how to install Photoshop 5.5 to run in Panther instead of classic.

I am constantly amazed given the economy of the last few years, that technology companies do not believe that every consumer is just dying to upgrade to the next big thing.

Working people stick with what works for them and upgrade as they can afford to of need to. Occasional version problems are the price of being bleeding edge.

    I wouldn't say Illustrator 10 sucks, but...

I am having some serious problems. I recently upgraded to a 20" Imac running 10.3 and I chose Illustrator 10.0.3 because of client needs. Mostly i save with Illustrator 8 compatibility. Illustrator 10 seems out of the question because of font incompatibility with older files.

The first problem I had was intermittent crashes when I used pathfinder filters. Now that problem is constant.

The new problem, and it is serious, is when I reopen some files I discover the fonts have been converted to outlines and placed art is goofed up. The image "looks" okay but I know it isn't.

Help! I need to get my work done!

    Frank,

Obviously you are ignoring the warning when saving down the AI10 file. Best to keep the file as AI10 until the last step and then save a copy as AI8. That way you can always edit the AI10 file and resave.

Stop saving back to version 8 for native artwork. Depending on different features you use in Illustrator and save settings, it is expected behavior for some fonts to convert to outlines.

Only save an extra copy of the finish artwork in 8 and you may want to convert all of the fonts to outline for this. (that is, if you require a version 8 file to print from)

Me, I only save in version 10 or 11 (CS) now. Not counting client supplied artwork.

Thanks, I just discovered the pathfinder filter works again in a test file. Not sure what the difference is.

Also discovered the files with placed art problems are ones in which the art is unflattened psd and saved as Illustrator with 8 compatibility.

Looks like what I need to do is work in 10, forget about 8 for the time being. Then when the artwork is approved convert the placed psd to tif or eps (depending on client).

My existing files with placed tif are fine, even though saved as 8 compatible.

    Thanks for helpful suggestions!

Yes, that seems to solve my problems for the moment:

Stick to version 10.ai and worry about final files later. That way I can place unflattened psd for preliminary artwork and the pathfinder filters work fine.

Not sure why I would ever want to outline fonts in final art, though, since my text is always labels that may need editing. And I'm sure my clients won't go for it either.

Anyway, thanks for your help! Great forum!

Text that is below transparent items when flattened will convert to outlines.

Text above transparency will not. So, if your artwork contains text under transparent elements, the portion of text under is converted thus giving you what appears to be thicker type only in the area under the transparency. To combat this, converting all text to outlines serves the purpose of a uniform look.

I assume that your printer's requirements designate ai8 files. Also note that incorrect trap settings can also cause text to appear bolder in areas where in comes in contact with transparency regardless if it is above or below.

    Amen Brother!

10 did suck though. Even though I had 9 and 10 I used v8 until CS was shipping. Since I got CS, I've used it exclusively.

That is a difference of opinion. 10 did not suck.

CS puts all previous versions to shame.
