Illustrator 9.0 automatically converts CMYK documents to RGB

I am working in Illustrator 9.0 on a Windows XP and set my document color mode to CMYK. When I save and close my document and then reopen it, the document has converted to RGB. I have tried changing my color settings to U.S. Prepress Default, assigned the U.S. Web Coated (SWOP)v2 profile, then turned Color Management Off completely, but inevitably my document always opens in RGB no matter what options I choose. When I save the file with an older version compatibility, like Illustrator 8.0, the CMYK color mode is retained, however this produces more problems in how my text and objects are displayed.

I saw a message posted from 2001 with this same question, but there was no answer posted for the question. I'd appreciate any help with this issue.

This can happen if you have your PDF settings set to 'Screen'. Save
something as PDF with a different setting and it should not happen again.
