Delta,
This is a well known problem with version 1.0. Please upgrade to version 2 or newer.

Re: Illustrator Automatically RESIZES saved artwork!!
I have the same problem of objects and layers shifting after saving the file...
when you say "upgrade to version 1.0 or newer" do you mean update from version 10 to version 10.0.3?

Re: Illustrator Automatically RESIZES saved artwork!!
C,
What version of Illustrator are you using? Which Windows version?
Is your answer to the question Rob asked in post #1 'yes'?
If so, please tell us the new size of the original 2" x 3" object as reported in the transform palette as well as the exact steps other users here should take to try to replicate the problem.

Re: Illustrator Automatically RESIZES saved artwork!!
Harron-
I am currently running Illustrator 10, and just updated to 10.0.3 this morning.
Unfortunately I do not know the exact size of the objects before saving. Checking the transform dialogue box of a previous version of the file shows that a placed tiff image went from (H)15.06%, (V)15.06% to the current file's (H)23.83%, (V)24.938%.
Other layers have shifted proportionally also. Any ideas? Do you think the update will solve the problem?

Re: Illustrator Automatically RESIZES saved artwork!!
C,
If you are talking about transform function dialogs, such as 'move' and scale,' the values you enter are retained for the next use.
For example, if you halve the dimensions of your placed TIFF by using the scale transform at 50%, the next time you open that transform dialog, the 50% value will still be there. But it's not indicating what you did the last time; rather it's indicating what will happen if you click OK. If you now click OK, you will AGAIN halve the image dimensions.
The next time you open that dialog, it'll STILL say 50% (although your image is now scaled to 25%).
In other words, Illustrator remembers the TRANSFORM you made, assuming you'll want to use it again (perhaps on another object). I know some page layout apps keep track of cumulative scaling, so this can be confusing.
The "(H)23.83%, (V)24.938%" values you report are there because that's what you happened to use the last time in that dialog. They have NOTHING to do with any transformations your selected object may have previously undergone.
Not understanding this, you may have inadvertently applied transformations to objects, just by opening the dialogs and clicking on OK. This would explain the changes you've noticed.
Rob and I were talking about the transform PALETTE. Open it, and you'll see quick entry boxes for position coordinates (X,Y), scaling (W,H), rotation, and shear. Current position and size will be reported in the units you selected in preferences, and you can enter new values in any of Illustrator's recognized units. You can even enter percentages into these boxes, making this palette very handy for quick transformations.
The 10.0.3 update addressed a number of issues and is definitely worth installing in any event.

Re: Illustrator Automatically RESIZES saved artwork!!
Harron-
Thanks for sticking with me on this problem...I manipulated the placed image once. I placed the image then scaled it using the scale command to reduce its size. No other changes were made to the placed image. I understand what you are saying about the scale/transform entries but I don't think that is the problem. It is shifting/resizing/moving linked images and polygon fills.
The result is as if I were to change the image size in photoshop to the linked image and then when I open the Illustrator file the entire linked image has been modified. Very strange.
The (H) and (V) values were taken from the Links\Information\Transform dialogue box.
I am going to make some changes then close it and see what happens. I am hoping the update fixes the problem.

Re: Illustrator Automatically RESIZES saved artwork!!
Thanks for the comments. The update didn't do much good as far as fixing the problem. When I opened the file this morning the same problem. I'm throwing my hands up at this point!

Re: Illustrator Automatically RESIZES saved artwork!!
I am using CS and had the same problem, especially when saving my work as .pdf files. I spoke with the support team and they suggested the following:
Once you establish the artboard that you will use to create the artwork, choose the Rectangle tool and draw a rectangle over the entire artboard (document). Once you have a rectangle covering the entire artboard, choose the Object menu, choose Crop Area, and then choose Make. This will select the artboard area as the Crop Area. This should resolve the problem you're having.
Hope this helps!

Re: Illustrator Automatically RESIZES saved artwork!!
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a shot.
Another quirky annoyance is that the file de-links all the linked images when i open the file.

Re: Illustrator Automatically RESIZES saved artwork!!
Hi!
I work in CS4 on a MAC and I was having the same problem. Ai would automatically resize artwork that I previously saved (specifically .pdfs). I double/triple/quadruple checked that I typed in the correct size but when I would reopen the file the dimensions would be like 1/16" off.
To remedy this problem I deleted my Adobe Illustrator CS4 preferences folder (i.e. the one that holds all your personalized shortcut commands and saved work spaces). To access this folder close illustrator first then locate the preferences folder via the following path:
HD/users/library/preferences/Adobe Illustrator Settings
Next drag the entire folder to the trash but don't empty the trash in case you wish to use it sometime in the future.
I hope this helps (^_^)
Best,
