Illustrator Colors - Adobe Illustrator Windows

I'm doing a design and wanted to know if I was only allowed to use CMYK colors or Pantone colors as well. This design will be sent to the printers. i get lost when it comes to Pantone, coated, uncoated, solid, etc... Thank you, Mary...

    Mary,

Pantones are more expensive, and so is the actual printing if you use both process and spot. It is not unusual to use Pantones as inspiration for process colours. Pantones have more brilliance so you can rarely match them completely, but if your monitor is properly calibrated you will more or less see the process colour simulation when you select a swatch; the brilliance and the general out of gamut properties show in a swatch book. Coated/uncoated is about paper, Solid means blended from a number of Pantone inks, the 4 process and 15 others; Process means process only.

If you do choose any of the other swatches in Pantone etc, you can change them to CMYK by double-clicking on the swatch and changing to Process CMYK there. (The same applies in ID as well.) That means the printer won't have any hassles if they are printing CMYK only.
