Re: Illustrator CS (11) crashes ALL THE TIME!
Panther.3 , CS , Dual800G4 Haxies= Default folder X
Font Agent Pro installed
Illustrator 10 on system as well
This probably won't be much help to anyone but does illustrate the hard-to-pin-down nature of these crashes.
Yesterday, after running crashfree for more than a month, Illustrator (CS) crashed while I was in find font. At the time I was trying to find substitute for a font that the program couldn't find and had already made a substitute for. I was sacanning through the available fonts on the system (in the find font dialogue) and it crashed without warning. I reopened the same file, did the same thing and it crashed again. While I perhaps should have repeated it a third time, I was on a deadline and just manually changed the fonts in the character palette.
That was a couple of days ago and I've had no problems since.
Why, you might ask, does this illustrate a "hard-to-pin-down" nature? I'm not sure, except that I've had similar repeatable problems (not all related to type) that have repeated for one simple operation but went away once I worked around that particular step.
Next time I encounter a similar crash, I'll test it more throughly and save a copy of the original.

Re: Illustrator CS (11) crashes ALL THE TIME!
I can understand how things crash under certain circumstances, but to have so many people having the same problem of Illustrator crashing while trying to save or print files, tells me there's a problem with either the program or the operating system. One of these needs to be fixed so we can get on with our jobs and not worry about or have to genuflect every time we save or print a file.

Re: Illustrator CS (11) crashes ALL THE TIME!
Harry,
Yes I have that folder.
And it doesn't crash every time, but a lot.
Since both machines started around the same time, I suspect a conflict with the OS also, since I tend to update the OS when I get the notifications.

Re: Illustrator CS (11) crashes ALL THE TIME!
I did a clean system install and Illustrator hasn't crashed yet. Also, I decided not to update my system. As long as everything is working, I would rather not risk doing the update and possibly having to go through this again. I lso genuflect everytime I save or print (not sure if it helps, but so far it hasn't crashed). Hope this helps someone.

Re: Illustrator CS (11) crashes ALL THE TIME!
Ditto. I ran into a problem with Adobe Illustrator CS and the Virex beta. Illustrator would crash every time I went to print. I called Adobe and they help me narrow it down to a startup item. I removed the virex startup items and everything is fine.

Re: Illustrator CS (11) crashes ALL THE TIME!
I'm not sure anyone's mentioned this yet, so I'll let you know what I've found that seems to have stopped all crashing of AICS in its tracks.
I was on the Extensis site and they said on there that Suitcase X1 can react badly with AICS - so go to AI preferences, to the Suitcase auto-activations prefs, and make sure Enable fontsync support is switched OFF.
Now I can save AICS files without the fear of a crash!
If anyone else is running Suitcase too, then try this. Possibly any program that uses Fontsync might make AICS unstable...

Re: Illustrator CS (11) crashes ALL THE TIME!
Tommy, where did you say 'Enable fontsync support' prefs is located?

Re: Illustrator CS (11) crashes ALL THE TIME!
Go to AI prefs, then suitcase auto activation prefs.

Re: Illustrator CS (11) crashes ALL THE TIME!
Doh! Stupid question. Is it safe to leave Auto Activation on do you think, or is Fontsync the main culprit?

It seems to have fixed it for me - make sure it's switched off!

George
when your done with the gun, pass it this way.
CRASHES CRASHES CRASHES
We too have nothing good to report re CS. Adobe 'on-phoneline'(costly!) did not help really, for the next day it was back to 'Crashville' Has anyone found/posted a solution?
We also have other joyfull CS surprizes. A window with the message
"... not enough memory..." appears; this on our G5/OS 10.3.3 with 1gb of memory and running only Illustrator CS at crash time.

Re: Illustrator CS (11) crashes ALL THE TIME!
Jack that sounds like you have not read the forum or have not done a search of the forum for this problem.
I will tell you what it sound like, since it is a G5 and this seems to be a problem with the firmware I would say this is mismatched RAM. I know you don't want hear or accept this but it certainly sounds that way. You can run the Hardware Test Utility but that will not tell you you have bad RAM as that is not the case you just have both Apple RAM and RAM that is not now supported by the Firmware and this has been mentioned many times here.
You will be find that many people are running AI CS on G5s in 10.3. and 10.3.4 without problems. See what I am saying?

Do you have some crashlogs you could send my way? Sending them to Apple does nothing for us unfortunately.
Cheers,
Dave
