Hi,
Check language setting (WinXP) in "Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Advanced > ... language version of non-unicode programs...". Setting to "English (US) (Than must restart) seems to solve the problem. It really works!!!

Tell your IT guys to change the hard drive controller ribbons, it sounds like you got a bad one and having trouble reading and writing to your hard drive. Your IT guys can check the Administrative Tools\Event Viewer\System Log to see if there are any references to a disk error.
