I know, I didn't even realize all those fonts were there until I opened AI.
Now that I know where they are, I can add them to my FontReserve database.

When you register the Creative Suite, you're given the option of a bonus. One of the bonuses is the ability to download Brioso. Go back to the online registration area on the Adobe website. If necessary, reregister your copy of Creative Suite, then look down at the bottom page for the offer.

illustrator 11 (cs) and indesign 3 (cs) are two of the reasons we're removing quarkxpress and getting everyone up to speed on the creative suite bundle. some of the early comments on this thread are (as the person i'm replying to already said) rubbish. i would have responded earlier but it took me two days to stop laughing at the first quote.

Adobe includes fonts that are installed in the HD/Libraries/Application Support/Adobe/fonts folder

Inside this folder is a folder called Reqrd. My guess is that the fonts are required, am I right?

    Thanks

I thought of that one and I have done that. I guess that it would have been nice if Adobe had decided to use the available font folders in OS X to place their fonts there.

For me it now adds yet another place where fonts can hide.

I'm of the camp that feels the folder chosen by Adobe was not a good one. First off, they're simply hard to find. But then, when you do, you're not sure if you should mess with them because it's difficult to look at a folder and answer, "Is it clear the this fonts folder, and/or the fonts within it, can be deleted, moved, or otherwise manipulated by me? Or, must they remain as installed?" The key here is that LOTS of users, both Windows and Mac, will (literally) not touch anything that is not obviously of their own creation, and a folder along a path of that name looks like it should be left alone.

For a set of free fonts the application doesn't need I would prefer something obvious, like a folder on the desktop named "Free fonts from Adobe". I will see it later, even after the next reboot, and it's clear that I can move them around as needed. And I don't have to call support or use the Forum to find this out.

For fonts that *are* required, I'd rather Adobe work toward several goals:

    * Combine the required fonts into as few folders as possible. On my machine
(Panther 10.3.3) I presently have six separate paths that end in "Fonts"
but contain "Application Support : Adobe" somewhere along the way. Perhaps
six really is the minimum, but somehow I doubt it
    * Reduce the requirements per the language settings. In other words, if
I don't select Language-X support during install and I've told the installer
I don't care if I ever see a Language-X character in my life (if I encounter
one a box or a dot or a sad face is fine by me), then don't install the
fonts that support Language-X. (Note to Pelicans: Don't confuse this with
    not wanting the engine.)
    * Document the font methodology in a readme (not just an install log)

I have always struggled with understanding font management; up until now, using System 9 & earlier, I was content to drop the fonts I needed into the system folder.

Today I have installed Illustrator CS, OS Panther.

I'm doing technical diagrams for a designer, who wants Futura Light and Futura Heavy to be used. The Futura fonts that appear to come with the OS, do not resemble these fonts(or perhaps they typefaces at this point?). Do I now have to purchase new fonts? Are the fonts I used in system 9 now useless?

I realise this is a very basic question, and maybe I've missed something obvious in reading this thread, but I would appreciate someone taking the time to clarify this.

    Thanks

Gail: The short answer is, your old fonts ought to work fine in OS X> But this is pretty far off the thread topic, of which OpenType fonts are bundled with Illustrator CS. InDeed, it's not even an Illustrator specific question. I suggest you start a new thread in ATM/Type Mac. to get into this in more detail. People will have an easier time identifying the thread there....
