Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
Hi...
It's obvious from the many threads in this forum that Illustrator CS is problematic and crashes fairly often. I've just installed 3 new G5s 1.8DP with OSX 10.3.3 and also face the same problem with Illustrator CS.
Is Adobe any closer to finding out what the problem is and will it help if I downgrade OSX back to 10.3.2? In my situation, Suitcase X1 is installed and open and Illustrator is the only other application that's open.
Would appreciate any feedback..it is getting frustrating getting all these calls from my users.
Thanks & regards!

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
Tang if you read a little closer and actually enter any of the threads you will probably find that the solution to your problem is within those threads as AI CS is a pretty stable application and is not prone to crashing.
For instance do you have any haxies installed? Did you repair your permissions?
What I'm doing go read the threads.

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
You don't have Spell Catcher, Norton Anti Virus or ant Virus Protection you don't have any fonts installed and you don't have other applications installed only AI CS is that what you are saying. You have no browser or internet connection totally clean system?
Is that correct?
Just AI CS and the system. I think you found a bug!

Try to pinpoint exactly what you are doing when it crashes. The forum might be able to help a little more.

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
I think the problem is Suitcase and Adobe CS because there is NOTHING else on my system.

When is it crashing? On startup or saving? Loading fonts?

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
I'll chime in again here.
CS crashes on me now and then, perhaps once or twice a day. I recently reinstalled my whole system (3.3) on a clean disk and it took about two weeks for it to produce the first crash.
I have font agent pro, Default folder X and a suite of Rick johnson plugins but otherwise its pretty bare. Illustrator is the only program that has crashed so far.

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
But what were you doing when it crashed?

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
One more thing: When it crashes, the icon is still highlighted (with the little triangel) in the dock and takes a minute or two to clear. Does this mean anything?

What steps have you taken to fix this?

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
I've taken no steps to fix it. What steps could I take? Like I said, I started with a complete clean drive 3 weeks ago. I could o back and do it again, then patiently wait a week or two between each tiem I would install any of the fonts or utilities.

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
Trash AI preferences, repair permissions, see if you have any corrupt fonts, create a new user account with administration priviledges, trash Adobefnt.lst files, trash Adobe Online pluggin.
I did read something here that said when you installed AI you need to install all the languages. Whatever that means.
Make sure Illustrator is closed for all of these steps.

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
Yes there's Internet connection and only Quark XPress 6, not including the apps which came with the system. I did have Norton Systemworks installed. I read somewhere that this might cause a problem. Have since uninstalled it...hoping that it would stop AI CS from crashing...but NO...it still crashes...unexpectedly quits. There doesn't seem to be a reproducible pattern to what the user was doing when it crashes. So I'm baffled. Next thing, I'm going to try to do is downgrade OSX back down to 10.3.2 to see if it helps. After that, trash Suitcase X1. What next??? Beats me! :-(

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
Joe- Two weeks between crashes sounds fairly stable to me. I have been using Illustrator for several years, and occasional crashes have always been my (and the others I work with) experience. My experience so far with CS has been about once or twice month, which is much better than Ill 10 and 8 were for me.

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
YP if you had Norton System Works an uninstalled it there could still be several problems as it puts things in place you might not know of did use the installer to uninstall or did you simply trash the app.?Also you will have to trash the System Works preferences which were probably left behind as well as AI CS preferences and perhaps the finders .plist and restart. Also you have to then repair the permissions.

--If you used the Archive & Restore feature when upgrading to Panther, uninstall all of your Adobe products, including the various Settings folders, and re-install.
--If you didn't disable your anti-virus software before installing, re-install.
--Open and place files only from the local hard drive, not from removable media or networked drives.

Re: Illustrator CS crashing...any solution yet?
Hey Tang,
I'm essenitally running into a lot of the same problems. To all the people who are claiming it's some kind of "haxie" and not a problem will Illustrator CS, my question would be - why do these problems not occure in 10.0.3? I left both versions on most machines and the majority of users have switched back to version 10 because it's far more stable. I've looked in several of the threads and found fixes to a bunch of individual problems. Bottom line, CS is not nearly as stable as version 10 and needs to be updated ASAP.
