    Anthony,

I read your question and I was wondering if you (and I) are the only one with that problem.
I have the same problem and no solution. I use illustrator barcodes and having problems to place the art.
Choosing a tiff preview isn't an option!

Is there no one who can help us?????

    O.K.

What does that option really do, by the way? I have problems with .eps files imported into AI and PS but I'm not sure what you are asking.

If you choose a preview of NONE in PhotoShop or AI you will get a big blank gray rectangle filled with nothing.

If on a Mac choose 8 Bit Mac.

If on a PC choose 8 Bit Tiff.

We found that it was some kind of problem with older Illustrator files (v7, v8, v9). If you actually open the Illustrator file in Illustrator CS (v11) and 'Save as' and replace - you will get your preview in Quark v6.

    Slightly annoying.

But previews are nearly always awful (a matter of intrepretation), since you're looking at a low-resolution version of the page.

The only important question is does it print and separate correctly?

If you need to show the imported files better, make pdfs of your quark pages. You should see the full-resolution image correctly, although some vector graphics at small magnifications look kind of chunky. If you magnify them to see them "close" they'll look fine.

I think a lot of people would like better previews in Quark. There are Quark Xtensions which can give you better preview abilities, but they create and link to new preview files which can be confusing to deal with. I don't remember the name of the extension, but I could find it when I go home, if anyone's interested.

    To Jonf:

Print and separate are not th only important questions. I like to place my isbn files exact in a predefined square. In Quark Xpres I cannot place the file exact. Printing and separation are correct, but I do not like to make 3 prints before the file looks to be placed allright!
Therfore I paid to much for the update!

If you register your XPress update to 6.1 you get a link to a "free?" extension; "Full resolution preview".
The name suggest more than it is. There is no difference between with or whitout!

Did you install the full resolution xtension?

Did you select the image and Item>Preview Resolution>Full resolution?
    >In Quark Xpres I cannot place the file exact.
Well, I can. But, InDesign is much better to use over Xpress. So yes, the upgrade for Xpress 6 was a waste of money compared to crossing over to InDesign.

Exept that the work I did for the last 10 years (repead orders) cannot be imported in InDesign!
I tried a demo version and a lot of files gave problems. Specially books (70% of my business). A lot of different textflow…

So that is why I waste money…
